Learning When To Perform CPR With AHA CPR Courses
CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is proven to be extremely beneficial for treating cases of heart failure. CPR of course is the act of manually compressing the chest with two hands and then injecting air through the mouth, a process known as ventilation. For adults, the CPR ratio and formula is 30 pumps to 2 ventilation, for 1 minute.
Prior to undertaking any type of CPR or first aid, a layperson is taught to first assess the person’s consciousness by tapping, shaking, or speaking to the person. If there is no response, the person can be considered unconscious, and pulse palpation and breathing assessment can be done. CPR can be started immediately if there is no pulse or breathing.
Who Requires CPR Certification And Should Take AHA BLS Healthcare Provider Training
CPR certification is primarily required of health care professionals who work in ambulance services and hospitals. There are two levels of CPR training: BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support).
BLS provider classes teach emergency healthcare workers how to administer CPR and RB (rescue breathing). Choke management is also often taught as part of these courses as well. It’s important to note here that RB and CPR techniques differ significantly between adults, children, and infants. Therefore, it’s imperative that those administering them have received the appropriate training ie PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) for children and infants.
After passing the AHA BLS Healthcare Provider training, practitioners can enroll in AHA ACLS classes to further their emergency response training. These courses provide more in-depth training for reviving a patient.
ACLS incorporates the use of machines like ECGs and defibrillators along with basic life support procedures. However, it doesn’t cover HOW to use this equipment so students must already be familiar with it, and know how to read an ECG output.
Cardiac drugs are also used in ACLS. These types of drugs can greatly improve the change of survival when combined with CPR.
Cost Of BLS Healthcare Provider Course And Certification
The cost of AHA CPR courses and certification vary. Whilst some hospitals and organisations cover the cost of training for their staff, others don’t. The process of becoming a certified AHA BLS Healthcare Provider includes not just the course work but also a final diagnostic exam and a demonstration of competency. Certificates and identification cards are only issued once these have been completed and candidates have displayed their proficiency and knowledge. This certification needs to be renewed every two years in order to keep abreast of research and updates issued by the American Heart Association.
